La Gruta de Belen is a centre in a slum in the outskirts of Caracas called Catia La Mar, and is run by the Missionaries of Charity. The purpose of the Centre is to help children who, due to legal requirements or family problems have no access to formal schooling. Their aim is to level this kids to the national standards, so they can progress into formal education. They also feed them a meal a day, which is crucial to their development as it is their only meal a day in most of the children.
We have contributed with them by donating them school material with a program we launched called a Penny for a Pencil.
Once a week they run a sports/recreation program where the kids are bused to football fields at the “Universidad Catolica Andres Bello” where special sports coaches and yoga instructors work with them for 2 hours every Thursday, whilst there they are also given a very generous balanced snack. They are also provided with sports equipment and gear (football shorts/t-shirts and trainers) to fully benefit from the experience. This helps them with their physical development and team building.
Twice a year, during Christmas and at the end of the school year they have and outing either to an entertainment park or to the beach.
Chamos has been helping to fund them since 2015 and we look forward of keeping this beautiful project happening and to keep helping the volunteers financially so they can keep up their work.
