Millions of children around the world do not attend school regularly due to hunger, lack of transportation and a shortage of teachers.
UNESCO warns of a global teacher shortage, while the pandemic exacerbated the situation with prolonged school closures, some of which are still operating with reduced schedules due to lack of resources.
Schools were closed for almost two years during the pandemic; and even now, many are only open part-time due to lack of resources and teachers
The implications of the crisis mean that an entire generation is at risk of being left behind, missing out on opportunities for educational and social development.
We support our partners in their work to provide children and young people with these vital opportunities - both in and outside of the classroom - and help them achieve their full potential.
HIGHER EDUCATION
Through the Chamos Scholarship Program, we have awarded school and university scholarships to 14 young individuals, providing them with the opportunity to access quality education. Our program supports these students throughout their entire academic journey, ensuring consistent financial assistance until the day they graduate.
NUTRITION AT SCHOOL
Hunger is one of the biggest reasons for children not attending school in Venezuela. Since 2018, we have been supporting a programme that provides 460 students and teachers with daily balanced meals, significantly increasing attendance and improving children’s ability to learn while at school.
BUILDING CAPACITY
Following the pandemic, thousands of children have fallen behind in basic reading, writing and maths. We're helping them catch up by giving tools to schools and communities: setting up community-led education centres, training parents and teachers in innovative teaching methodologies, and equipping schools with technology.
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Community participation and socialising are as important to children’s development as a formal education. We work on projects to offer these opportunities - from recreational activities and toy donations to extracurricular courses like participatory design programmes, through which children transform a public space in their community.
RESOURCES & INFRASTRUCTURE
In 2023, we provided programming courses for 52 young people and equipped computer classrooms in schools to improve their digital education, benefiting a total of 566 children.
REDUCING DROPOUT RATES
For many young people living in Petare, one of the biggest favelas in South America, studying and prioritising education is close to impossible. We sponsor 40 students on a programme that supports them through their final years of school, aiming at reducing dropout rates and giving them opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable to them.Â
