We are completely overwhelmed by the support we received from our incredible Chamos Community on November 30th, making it the most successful #GivingTuesday we have ever had!
#GivingTuesday is a global movement with the aim of encouraging and multiplying good deeds. The idea is to dedicate one day worldwide, after the excess of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, to celebrate giving, selflessness, and generosity.
This #GivingTuesday, Chamos set out with the goal of raising enough money to transform a 800 square metre area in Petare - the biggest slum in Venezuela - into a fun, safe place where 1000 kids would be able to play, rest, and have a source of clean water. This 'oasis' had been designed by 76 of the children themselves, through a programme run in 2020 by our local partner, Trazando Espacios. Making their design into a reality would not only transform the space, but also show them that their aspirations are achievable - a huge feat in an area with such limited opportunities.
By the end of the campaign, we had raised an overwhelming $46,875, on top of which we expect to receive around $11,800 in match funding from Global Giving - meaning we will receive over $58,600!
The funds raised for The Oasis Project will mean that, in early 2022, we will be able to make the Oasis in Petare a reality - building, creating and decorating the space with the very children that designed it.
But this is not all: the overwhelming success of the campaign means that we will be able to take The Oasis Project even further. Thanks to the funds we raised above and beyond our target, we will be able to begin the process of replicating the Oasis Project in additional communities across Venezuela. We have already identified a number of our local partners who work in deprived areas of the country - areas where the importance of play, creativity and aspirations for children is often overlooked, and where safe public spaces, playgrounds, and access to drinking water are extremely limited. We now have the certainty of funding to make plans to launch the first phase of the Oasis Project with selected additional partners - something we are incredibly excited about.
