In June 2022, we visited the community La Marroquina, in Yaracuy state, for the first time, with a team from our partners Proyecto Mayú. This was the first of a number of visits we'd be making to this community, and was specifically to identify and understand the needs here, through questionnaires and meeting members of the community.
After this first research trip, we worked with the Mayú team to design a programme, incorporating healthcare and resource provision with educational workshops, to have a real impact in the community.
In July, we visited La Marroquina for the second time - this time for three days, accompanied by 43 volunteer medical students and doctors. While there, we were able to:
- Provide specialised medical and dental consultations and care to hundreds of members of the community
- Install a water filter in the local school, providing safe, clean drinking water to 250 students
- Give talks on the family planning, menstrual hygiene, and the importance of clean water
- Carry out testing on the main water sources in the community, and interview over 300 members of the community to understand their water needs
We'll be heading back to La Marroquina in the next few months to assess the impact of our intervention and continue our project - stay tuned!
